Katie Reus has a Deadly Obsession (& Giveaway) Back to Blog

Today, I’m excited to have romantic suspense and paranormal romance author Katie Reus at my blog.  Katie writes some wonderful, pulse-pounding stories, and I am always glad when she stops by for a visit.  And did I mention that she came with a gift? Cause she did. One lucky commenter will win a digital copy of Katie’s new release, DEADLY OBSESSION.

Why Romantic Suspense?

Thank you so much to Cynthia for having me here today!

Why romantic suspense? This is one of the most common questions I get when people discover I’m a writer. Growing up I read a lot of straight contemporary romances because I had no clue any other kind of romance existed. To get my fix, I stole romance books from my mom’s stash so I had to take what I could get. However, I also read a lot of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books which is where I gained my love of mysteries. Then, in 1999 (I remember the year b/c it changed my reading experience) I discovered a new subgenre of romance and I was forever hooked on the awesome combination of romance and suspense! Watching two characters fall in love is always an emotional journey but it’s even more fun when they’re battling external forces determined to keep them apart.

In Deadly Obsession, my recent release from Carina Press, the two main characters haven’t seen each other in a decade and a deranged serial killer is intent on making them both suffer. So in addition to battling their still burning attraction to one another they’re also trying to find out who is terrorizing the hero’s small town (while trying to stay alive).

So even though I fell in love with romance and mystery as separate genres, I now get to combine what’s great about both of them. That’s ultimately why I write romantic suspense. I get the best of two of my favorite worlds. What do you love about romantic suspense? One commenter will be entered to win a digital copy of Deadly Obsession. The winner will be announced in the comments section of this blog on Monday, August, 29 2011 with instructions how to contact me so please check back.

Deadly Obsession now available from Carina Press.

The chilling words of a killer: This is just the beginning…

Ten years ago, Lilly Carmichael left town without an explanation, breaking Braden Donnelly’s heart. The death of her aunt has brought Lilly home–and face to face with memories she thought were long buried. Still getting over a traumatic incident from her work as an NSA agent, Lilly initially dismisses the face at her window as a figment of stress-induced paranoia.

Now the sheriff of Hudson Bay, Braden has spent the last year hunting a sadistic murderer. But his investigation is turned upside down when new evidence indicates that Lilly is the killer’s next target. Determined to protect the woman he’s never stopped loving, Braden must race against the clock to trap a dangerous psychopath—before it’s too late…

A little about me: I’ve been reading romance from a young age (since I discovered my mom’s hidden stash) and the addiction stayed with me into adulthood. I write dark paranormal romance and sexy, fast-paced romantic suspense. Currently I write for Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne (Destined Mate, October 2011), and in early 2012 the first book in my paranormal series will release from NAL/Signet Eclipse (Alpha Instinct: A Moon Shifter Novel). Deadly Obsession sounds great! I love romantic suspense…it’s the best of two worlds as you mentioned…mystery, romance and sometimes lots of action. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys and really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery as it unfolded. I also even enjoyed Cherry Ames, Student Nurse books because Cherry was always solving some kind of mystery – though she personally didn’t get much in the way of romance..lol…I like that in the newer romantic suspense books we get to see more action and that the stories reflect a little bit more realism- some of them seem like the crimes come straight from the nightly news. Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Katie Reus says:

Yay! Another Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys fan. I agree, I love the realism we get today. Jill Sorenson is a romantic suspense author I think does that very well. There’s a level of grittiness to her work that’s fantastic.

  8. Viki says:

Sounds very good. An intense read. Thank you

  9. Sharon says:

My early reading experiences sound similar to yours. I grew up reading Trixie Belden, Encyclopedia Brown, and Nancy Drew. I started reading my mom’s Harlequins when I was eleven or twelve, I guess. Now, there is nothing quite so comforting as a romantic suspense novel. I guess it’s an amalgamation of my two earliest reading loves!

To me, RS allows a couple to achieve a higher level of intimacy earlier than a traditional romance, due to the urgency of the situation. High action, high adrenaline equals more potent levels of attraction. Somehow, the relationship seems more meaningful in that it could all be over quickly if our couple doesn’t triumph over the villian! Plus, I just love a good who-dunnit!

    • Katie Reus says:

That’s about the time I started snagging books from my mom’s stash too. The perfect age to get hooked 🙂 Yes, I agree, all that adrenaline and action ramps up the sexual tension even more.

  10. Michelle Bledsoe says:

I love romantic suspense stories. They keep you on edge and make the romance plot even better. Thanks Cynthia and Katie for the post and giveaway. Deadly Obsession is going on my Amazon Wish List.

  11. Hilleary Peterson says:

Romantic suspence is actually what got me to start reading again after school. I got so tired of have to anaylize everthing to why authors choose a color for this, and archetypes and symoblism and all of that I just stopped reading for years. Finally picked up a RS book a few years later and have been hooked ever since. Thank you for the chance to win

  12. Becky says:

Another book to be read. I like romantic suspense because I like to be on the edge of my seat and love the romance.

  13. kaylea cross says:

Hey, Katie and Cynthia! I looove romantic suspense (but I’m biased).

This is another great read by you, Katie. Keep ’em coming!

  14. Katie Reus says:

I’m glad you love RS so much b/c I love your military romantic suspense 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Kaylea!

  15. Sherie says:

I love romantic suspense! I am a huge mystery/adventure fan. Some of my favorite authors are James Rollins and Steve Berry, but they are not very romantic in their books. Suspense adds the extra depth to a romance story. Or maybe it is the other way around. Are you a suspense writer that adds a little romance or are you a romance writer that makes the book more interesting with the suspense?

    • Katie Reus says:

I’ve never read either of those authors but if they write suspense I might have to check them out. To answer your question, I’m a romance writer but Deadly Obsession is much heavier on the suspense than any of my other works.

  16. Jacki says:

I love the new book – I can’t wait to read it. I cut my “suspense-mystery” teeth on Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden (I wanted to name my daughter Trixie – but my cousin said that it sounded too much like a stripper’s name) 🙂

    • Katie Reus says:

Someone else mentioned Trixie Belden but I never read her. If her adventures were anything like Nancy Drew I’m sure I would have loved her 🙂

  17. Colleen says:

I have been on a big Romantic Suspense kick lately… this sounds like it would be a perfect addition to my reading pile!

  18. Sherry says:

I love romantic suspense and I’m definitely adding this book to my wish list! I sure wish that I could win it. 🙂

  19. Diane Sadler says:

two for the price of one today! both great romantic suspense authors.

  20. Sadie Hart says:

I’m a huge romantic suspense fan. Action + romance = WIN! Deadly Obsessions sounds like a lot of fun and I love the fact that it’s also a reunion story. I love characters with past history between them. It always seems to make the romance so much more powerful.

  21. Chris Bails says:

This book sounds great and would love to win it. Katie is a new author for me and am always looking for new books to read. I also love reunion stories, and series of books. With series you follow along with the history with all the cast of characters. Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win.
