The Veil Between the Worlds is Thin…What Spirit Calls You? Back to Blog

Elissa WildsToday is Halloween, otherwise known as Samhain to those less conventional folks. Samhain marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It is the New Year for Wiccans and/or pagans. It’s also thought to be one of the two times during the year (the other time being Beltane May 1st) when the veil between the worlds is thinnest. For those of us who wish to honor our dead on this day,  it’s traditional to set a place at the dinner table for your departed loved ones. Participants eat in silence, in honor of those who have been silenced by death.

Since Samhain is also a time when many believe that it’s easier to foretell the future, participating in divination is also an appropriate way to spend the evening. Tarot cards, pendulum use, crystal ball gazing, scrying, tea leaf reading – there are endless possibilities for divining your future. A friend of mine (who loves Scrabble) suggested tossing scrabble tiles and seeing whether any particular words are formulated. A truly unique – and fun – idea!

So what do you say? Samhain is here. It’s  time to reach out and make contact with departed loved ones, spiritual guides, angels, or any being not of this realm. That is, if they don’t reach out to you first! In my book Between Light and Dark, one of the characters is contacted by her dead sister on Samhain. Rather than being a frightening event, it ends up being a joyful, healing one. I know it will be the same for you as well, should you decide to make contact with the other side.

What do you plan to do with this day/night? What ancestor will you be honoring? What answers will you be seeking for your future? Lest you think this is  all just too serious for you…well, please know that I enjoy having fun on Halloween just as much as the next person. Our family has plans for some serious trick-or-treating. And yes, I will be dressing up! What fun and frolicking do you have planned?

As a special gift from me to you on All Hallow’s Eve, I will be drawing a card for each person who comments. And I will post a very brief message message for you from….well…let’s just say, the beyond….

Happy Halloween! Merry Samhain!

Happy Halloween and Samhain. A freind sent me to your website and I must admit I found it very interesting. I do look forward to exploring it more. Tonight, the husband is taking our children and the child of a friend out trick or treating as I am home with the dog to give out goodies to any who come by. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable celebration of the season.

All I planned for today was traveling. I got up this morning, got dressed, ate breakfast, and left for the airport. I am now at my current destination and hope to enjoy a nice night where I might get some sleep since I didn’t get any last night.

Lucky for me, though, I did get to celebrate Halloween a little bit yesterday with my nieces and nephews when they came to the university where I work to do trick-or-treating. We had a lot of fun walking around campus getting candy. They even got their faces painted at the end of the day.

  3. Vicki says:

Thanks for the reading Elissa. The Spirit Guides seem to be telling me this alot. I’m going to really try to tune in and give the hunch the go ahead. 🙂

I’ll explain more to you at some other time.

  4. Nicole Renee says:

Thanks for posting this information… I’m going to try to contact my grandparents and maybe get some healing words. Happy Halloween!!!!!!!!!!!!

Merry Samhain! It’s been raining here all day and we’ve only had a handful of trick or treaters so far, but I’m still getting a kick out of seeing all of their cute costumes! If anyone else braves the weather, I plan on rewarding them with a HUGE amount of candy! It’s either that or wind up eating it ourselves. 😀

  6. Morning Glow says:

Oooh, I hope I’m not too late, I had to work all day. Thank you for coming by, and it’s so cool of you to do this for us! I wish I could have seen some of the trick or treaters, but I did see a few costumed kids at work.

    Thanks!
    Morning Glow

  7. Jacki C. says:

I will be going to a friend’s house to see if we can “remove” a spirit that needs to cross over.

  8. Chelsea B. says:

I’ve been watching Halloween movies all day! Dracula movies, Twitches, Halloweentown, The Mummy….Which isn’t exactly a Halloween movie, but it has Brendan Fraser, so I made an exceptoin 🙂 I hope everyone has a great Halloween!

  9. Pamk says:

Just got back from taking my youngest one trick or treating. Had a blast. I like the idea of honoring loved ones. I’ll have to keep that in mind and set a plate for my parents next year.

  10. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi everyone! We just got home from trick or treating. So excited to see all the new posts! Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to pull a card for everyone. If not tonight, then tomorrow!! Hope everyone had a fun, safe night!

  11. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Lori! How eloquently put! Hope you got to take that walk beneath the moon…it’s a gorgeous one! Lori, the card I pulled for you is “Creativity.” You have a lot of ideas for projects coming to you at once. And you’re good – really good – at your chosen art. The key will be choosing just one and getting down to the business of it. Finish one project before beginning another. This is hard for you, but it’s the only way you can accomplish all that you long to do!

  12. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Sue R! Good luck with your exams next week! The card I pulled for you is “Efficiency.” You’re juggling at lot at once right now. Busy, busy, busy! Phew! I’m exhausted FOR you! It’s going to be very important to stay organized and focused over the next couple months, but you’ll do it. You seem to thrive under pressure!

  13. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Brandy! That Harvest Fest sounds cool! One of my little ones does karate too. 🙂 The card I pulled for you is “Synthesis.” For you, this card represents a situation you’re feeling overwhelmed about. You need help and help is on the way. The right person is going to show up at the right time and lend a much needed hand. This seems to be job or money related (perhaps a bit of both.) Hang in there!

  14. CatsMeow says:

Happy Halloween and Samhain to you, Elissa and Cynthia.
My daughter just finished (with my help) an extensive geneology project for one of her college classes, so I hope our ancesters feel like we honored them with our research.
Not much is going on at our house. We haven’t even had our front door ring. I’m currently watching the annual Ghost Hunters Halloween Live show on SyFy. and I’m planning on staying up and watch all 6 hours.
Thanks in advance for the post from beyond…

Hi Darkreader! Scary movie watching is a perfect way to spend the night. They are always playing old Stephen King flicks this time of year. Love them! The card I pulled for you is “Clarity.” You’re having trouble seeing a situation with a loved one clearly. The situation is a bit troubling to you and you think you know the root cause but aren’t certain. Take some time to really meditate on it, open yourself up to receiving guidance, then trust what you get. You’ll be exactly correct, and you’ll know what to do to make things better.

  16. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Sherry C.! So glad the card spoke to you! And thanks for the feedback! 🙂

  17. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Sue B! I love Ghost Hunters. I watch whenever I can!! The card I pulled for you is “Power.” I love this card. It usually signifies personal power, and for you, that’s exactly what it means. You have a well spring of inner strength that has seen you through some tough times. There a happy times ahead. Wedding bells are ringing. Hmmm…you or someone close to you? Or both? (smiles)

  18. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi MarnieCollette! Hope you cooked up some yummy food tonight! I wish I were a good cook! The card I pulled for you is “Release.” You’ve either recently been letting a lot go – or this is to come soon – people, situations, things. Some of it you wanted to let go, some you didn’t. It’s hard, I know. But life is all about seasons. The season for these things has passed. A new one begins. Enjoy the beauty of each moment.

  19. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Angela! Sounds like you got the best part of the deal. You get to see all the cuties dressed up, and save your aching feet! The card I pulled for you is “Forgiveness.” Someone close to you has let you down. There continues to be tension between you. You’re having a hard time letting go of it. Partly because you also blame yourself. Take a deep breath. It’s time to forgive everyone involved. Then you can move forward.

  20. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Karin! Hope you’re getting some sleep, finally. Traveling can be tough! The card I pulled for you is “Clarity.” For you, this card refers to your personal insight into situations. Much like someone else who posted here today, you also have the ability to see to the truth of situations. It’s tough to pull the rug out from under you! However, lately, you’re having a difficult time getting a read on someone who is fairly new in your life. That’s only because you don’t necessarily like what your gut is telling you. Listen to your intuition. It’s spot on.

  21. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi again, Vicki! So glad the card spoke to you!

Hi Nicole! I hope you made contact with the grandparents. No doubt they are checking in with you more than you realize! The card I pulled for you is “Inspiration.” You’ve been feeling decidedly unispired of late. Things haven’t exactly been smooth sailing for awhile now. It’s time to seek out your inspiration instead of waiting for it to magically appear. Get out in nature. Listen to music. (Music has the ability to really move you, in particular.) Get some books on topics you’ve been curious about – and dig in. There is a shift coming for you. One that is going to make you look at your life, and the world, differently. I’m excited for you!

  22. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Alexia! I hope the rained stopped so you could enjoy the evening. Although, there is something deliciously spooky about a rainy Halloween night. The card I pulled for you is “Balance.” You have been trying to do too many things at once. You’re one person attempting to be three! Careful that you don’t overdo it or you’re likely to feel run down and catch the next cold or flu flying by. Try delegating what you can to others. And remember, it doesn’t all have to get done now! 🙂

  23. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Morning Glow! No worries! I certainly understand having to work. 🙂 The card I pulled for you is the “Wild Card.” Yay! This card means “anything is possible!” Seriously, my friend, buy a lotto ticket, wish on a star, just put your desires out into the universe and prepare to receive. Incidentally, don’t be surprised if a new – and better – work position comes to you soon. (just one of the ways your luck is changing) Lucky you!

  24. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Jacki! Oh, wow! I hope all went well tonight! The card I pulled for you is “Simplicity.” You’ve too much stuff and too much going on. You don’t know where to focus your energies next. Part of this is due to your ability to multi-task with the best of them. You’re used to a full schedule. It’s time to declutter and learn to say “no” when others keep asking for more of your time, money, advice, etc. Save some energy for you! 🙂

  25. Sheila Gallagher says:

I just came home from Night of the Singing Dead. It was fun. Some great lines as many celebrities who died this year and a few who have been dead for quite some time showed up and regaled us with song (some serious, some parody.) A fun night. Even Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley showed and did their Saturday Night Live skit. Funny!

  26. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Chelsea! I really enjoyed the movie The Mummy! Glad you got a chance to watch it today! The card I pulled for you is “Trust.” There’s something you really want to do, but don’t trust in a) your ability to do it well b) that the funds will be there when you need them c) that you’ll get the help you need. Trust that you’re on the right path. All will fall into place.

  27. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Pam! Are you as tired as I am after all that walking with the kids? LOL The card I pulled for you is “Balance.” You’re trying to be everything to everyone. But sometimes you lose track of who YOU are in the process. It’s time for some serious Pam-time. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. Family/friends will be just fine while you go rejuvinate!

  28. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi CatsMeow! That geneology projects sounds really great! I admire folks who trace their lineage way back. The card I picked for you is “Obedience.” You’re longing to go a bit wild, break some rules, but feel hampered by the rules of society and cultural expectations, not to mention expectations of family and friends. This is your permission to have some fun. Dye your hair a wild color if you want to. Plan an adventure someplace really different. Get a little wild and crazy with your partner. You may just inspire others around you to let loose a bit, too! You go, girl!

  29. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Shelia! That sounds like a really fun way to spend the night! That Swayze and Farley skit is still one of my favs from SNL! 🙂 Appropriately, the card I pulled for you is “Humor.” You have a sharp wit and great – if not sometimes a bit sarcastic – sense of humor. Your ability to find the humor in any situation has seen you through difficult times in the past. The universe is reminding you to keep this sense of humor in the months to come. There are some challenges ahead, but nothing to worry over, and nothing you can’t handle. This too shall pass! You’ll look back and chuckle.

  30. Elissa Wilds says:

It’s almost midnight and I’m signing off the computer for the night. I’m so excited to have gotten the chance to share this special night with you all. Thank you for your wonderful posts! And thank you, Cynthia, for having me here! I will check back in the morning for any late commenters so, if you didn’t get a chance to post until the wee hours of the morning, no worries.

As for your messages, please know that timing is one of the most difficult things (at least for me) to get a handle on. So if some of your message doesn’t make sense yet – give it a little time. I did my best to post your messages without going into too much detail – for the sake of your privacy. I hope you were still able to get the gist of it!

Merry have we met, merry shall we part, and (hopefully) merry shall we meet again.

    Brightest Blessings,

    Elissa
    🙂

  31. Danny says:

He is definitely not a deceased relative, because he like to touch my butt or hip, beside all the other stuff he is causing havoc with. That’s why I know he is male. LOL

  32. Mel K. says:

“You have a tendency to take on other people’s stuff without intending to do so. This can make you feel sluggish and cranky without knowing why.”

WOW. So true. And here I was thinking it was my thyroid. I’ve had no energy for the past two days. 🙂

I saw a shooting star last night. I know who sent it. So I was ‘contacted’.

    Thanks for the card, Elissa!!

  33. Faye Hughes says:

Sorry I missed all the fun yesterday, Elissa! Great blog!

    Faye

  34. Irene says:

I was born three hours too late to be a Halloween baby!
Perhaps the veil was still open just a little bit to let me in and out quickly.

    Enjoy the day!

  35. Elissa Wilds says:

Danny – oh my!!! I hope you figure out who he is soon. If he has been hanging around this long, there must be a good reason for it. LOL

Mel – YAY on the shooting star! I love when that happens!

Hi Faye! I understand. Halloween is a busy day for folks! But just because, here is a card for you. “Gratitude.” You have a lot to be grateful for. Lately, it seems like everything in your life is falling into place. Good friends, love, finances (maybe not perfect but not bad either all things considered), career is starting to head the way you want it to, etc. One of my favorite sayings is: the universe gives you more of what you’re grateful for. So keep that attitude of gratitude and watch as more good things come your way!

  36. Elissa Wilds says:

Hi Irene! You just made it in time. I promised hubby I’d check the blog one more time then we are off for a family flea market trip and a bookstore visit. I love Sundays! Irene, the card I pulled for you is “Spontaneity.” Although you actually can be quite spontaneous by nature (or at least you used to be), you’ve been stuck in a bit of a rut lately. It’s time to do something new and different. You like exploring the world around you and are a deep thinker. Combine the two. Go exploring something new and different that you’ve been interested in. Oh! And talk to those ghosts around you. Yes, I said ghosts. You and Danny seem to have something in common. You’ve got some folks hanging around you too. They mean you no harm. They are attracted to all that positive energy you exude.

  37. Elissa Wilds says:

That’s it for me, folks. Have a wonderful Sunday!

  38. Faye Hughes says:

Thanks so much, Elissa! And thanks,Cynthia for hosting the event.

    Faye

  39. Sue Brandes says:

Thank you so much. This was very fun.

  40. Brandy says:

    Thank you Elissa!
